Have ever had to face the punishment for a disobedient act as a child? When you knew that you really were in trouble with your parents or as we say in my place ( you have entered okro soup) you knew you were about to face the repercussion of your ill-behavior, it seems.. Inevitable! Ever been there? The rod of correction was about to be administered, you were saying your last prayers before the Big Bang! And all of a sudden.. Mumy becomes silent, then takes a deep breath and says " get out of my sight, you naughty...." without applying the judgement. Ever been there? As a child, I was there several times. Ah! What happened? Mercy!
Exodus 34:6 KJV
And the Lord passed by before him, and proclaimed, The Lord , The Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth,
What is Mercy?
Mercy is forgiveness, passion- it is, not giving us the punishment we deserve. Mercy is compassion shown to someone whom it is in ones power to harm or punish. Its the opposite of the wrath of God which occurs when His mercy is withdrawn.
God is plenteous in mercy, its sin and punishment for sin that makes man not to enjoy Gods mercy.
Mercy rejoices against judgment (James 2:13), and truly, Mercy triumphs, exalts, glories over punishment and consequences of disobedience. Lets take a look at Exodus 25:17-22
Exodus 25:17-22 KJV
And thou shalt make a mercy seat of pure gold: two cubits and a half shall be the length thereof, and a cubit and a half the breadth thereof. [18] And thou shalt make two cherubims of gold, of beaten work shalt thou make them, in the two ends of the mercy seat. [19] And make one cherub on the one end, and the other cherub on the other end: even of the mercy seat shall ye make the cherubims on the two ends thereof. [20] And the cherubims shall stretch forth their wings on high, covering the mercy seat with their wings, and their faces shall look one to another; toward the mercy seat shall the faces of the cherubims be. [21] And thou shalt put the mercy seat above upon the ark; and in the ark thou shalt put the testimony that I shall give thee. [22] And there I will meet with thee, and I will commune with thee from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubims which are upon the ark of the testimony, of all things which I will give thee in commandment unto the children of Israel.
The Mercy Seat covers, acts as a lid over The Ark of Covenant or the Ark of Testimony wherein according to Hebrews 9:4 is the Golden Pot that had the Manna- Which represents constant Supernatural Provision that which God made available to Israel unfailingly throughout the 40 years in the wilderness.
Contained in it also is Aaron's staff that budded- in Numbers 17 is the account of the budding /blossoming of Aarons rod- a dry old stick brought forth buds, bloomed, blossomed and yielded leaves, flowers and almonds- awesome! This represents the fact that God can give life to anything and anyone.
In the Ark of Covenant is also the Table of the Covenant- The Ten Commandments (The Law), as Paul said in Romans 7:7, we have not known sin except what The Law describes to be so. The Table of Covenant can also be described as the Book which, if disobeyed delivers judgment, consequences or punishment.
But thanks be to God that the mercy seat covers the Ark and God speaks from the two Cherubims upon the Mercy seat- Exodus 25:22.
James 2:13 KJV
For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.
Yes! Mercy indeed overrides, supersedes, triumphs, glories over any judgment or punishment for any past sins or sins of our predecessors( in the flesh ).
God did not speak to the children of Israel from the judgment box, but released and still releases His gracious Mercy and pardon, even to a thousand generations
( Deuteronomy 7:9 ) and thats why its from the Mercy seat- God is saying ...its Mercy not punishment, ... its pardon, forgiveness not repercussion.
The Mercy seat also covers or delivers to us all the goodies in the Ark of Covenant, Supernatural Continuous Provision everyday, just like the Manna was for forty years for the children of Israel in the wilderness- but much more than that- it entails not just food and drink, but everything you and I may need for life and sustenance, as long as it is a need, the provision is sure and unending.
How about Life? - What does the budding rod represent.
Longevity, Freshness, Life to the fullest, Nothing-dying, Growth, Increase, Flourishing and Blossoming - endlessly; ability to bring into living whatever has been termed dead, Life where we deserved death- Life! Not just life, but abundant, overflowing and eternal life- John10:10b
But this Mercy did not come cheap. In Leviticus 16:1-14 we realise an animal had to be slaughtered ( in our case Jesus Christ, our blameless lamb). Without this there is no remission or pardon of sins (Hebrews 9:22).
No wonder the scripture says in Exodus 12:13.
And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are : and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you , when I smite the land of Egypt.
Passover here means to skip over, hop -over, or spare you of the stumbling and judgments (plagues of the law) because blood is invoked. Blood signifies life (Lev. 17:11) and the shedding of Jesus' blood is a substitute for us and our seed- Hebrews 10:17.
Everything the Word says about the items in the Ark, Mercy brought to life by the blood;
Curse for disobedience- averted
Life,Unending Provision - Released
The blood of Jesus stirred and still stirs the Mercy of God.
What does mercy do for us, what does it make available?
-We are pardoned and forgiven-Numbers 14:18-19
- Gods wrath is turned away- Daniel 9, Jeremiah 3:12
- We get favored- Genesis 39:21

- We are kept alive- Psalm 119:77, Lamentation 3:22
- We are delivered like Israel, severally- Nehemiah 9:28-31

- We are victorious in life- Psalm 136
- We( Former Gentiles) were brought into the Abrahamic promises- Romans 15:9
- We are saved according to Gods mercy- Titus 3:5

- We are begotten again unto a hope that is alive- 1 Peter1:3

Of course, there are lots more to go with this. Glory be to God !
